Comedian, Producer Sues New York City Hospital for Medical Malpractice after “Botched” Surgery

A lawsuit brought by prominent South African comedian, producer, and television personality, Trevor Noah, against a New York City Hospital demonstrates to New York City patients and residents that not even celebrities are immune to doctor medical malpractice. According to national news reports, Trevor Noah brought a medical malpractice lawsuit against New York’s Hospital for Special Surgery after he allegedly was injured due to his doctor’s negligence. The surgical operation that Noah alleges rendered him injured and disabled was an “undisclosed operation” performed by Dr. Riley Williams III in 2020.

In the medical malpractice lawsuit filed in Supreme Court in Manhattan, Noah alleges that he was treated at the New York City-based hospital by Dr. Williams “for various medical conditions and other related treatment, including surgery which was performed on November 23, 2020.” He further alleges that he was “was rendered sick, sore, lame and disabled; sustained severe and painful personal injuries; sustained severe nervous shock, mental anguish, severe emotional distress and great physical pain; was confined to bed and home for a long period of time; was compelled to undergo hospital and medical aid, treatment and attention; has suffered loss of enjoyment of life; was prevented from engaging in his usual occupation for a long period of time; and since some of his injuries are of a permanent nature, he will continue to suffer similar damages in the future.” Defendant Hospital for Special Surgery stated in response to Noah’s claims that such claims were “meritless” and that “HSS is committed to excellence in the care we provide to each of the more than 150,000 patients we treat each year. This commitment has made HSS the world’s leading academic medical center specialized in musculoskeletal health, consistently ranked #1 in orthopedics globally and nationally.”

Noah ultimately contends in the lawsuit that, due to Dr. Williams’ medical malpractice, he “sustained permanent, severe and grievous injuries.” Accordingly, Noah seeks compensation in the lawsuit, and the damages are unspecified.
